The Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government may appoint a person to act as the Administrator of the Indian Ocean Territories (Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands) during any period, or during all periods, when the Administrator is absent from duty or is unable, for any reason, to exercise and perform the powers and functions of his or her office.
The Administrator is the most senior Australian Government representative in the Territories and is responsible for the law, order and good governance of the Territories.
