The purpose of the National Portrait Gallery of Australia is to develop, preserve, maintain, promote and provide access to a national collection consisting of portraits that reflect the identity, history, diversity and culture of Australia. The Gallery develops and engages a national audience and uses every endeavour to make the most advantageous use of the national collection in the national interest.
