Following the 2022 Federal Election outcome an interim Ministry has now been sworn in and the caretaker period has ceased. Further updates to this website will be made in due course.

Gene Technology Regulator

The Regulator administers Australia's national gene technology regulatory scheme to protect human health and the environment by assessing and managing risks which may be posed by genetically modified organisms. The Regulator licences and monitors work with GMOs, certifies physical containment facilities and accredits organisations. The scheme is comprised of Commonwealth Gene Technology Act 2000 and corresponding state and territory legislation. The Regulator is a statutory office holder with significant independence - similar to the Auditor-General and the Tax Commissioner. The Regulator is appointed by the Governor-General only with the agreement of the majority of all jurisdictions.
