Prior to 2023, Defence viewed Mental Health and Wellbeing largely as healthcare and safety responsibilities. The Defence Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy 2018-2023 identified the need to shift from this approach to one that focuses on using people systems to support Mental Health and Wellbeing. While some areas of Defence have promoted positive wellbeing; to date, these efforts have not been well coordinated for the benefit of the entire Defence workforce. This shift in focus is a key factor in the establishment of the Defence Mental Health and Wellbeing Branch (the Branch).
