The Science and Surveillance Branch:
• oversees the Northern Australia Biosecurity Strategy and its associated implementation plan
• delivers the Indigenous Ranger Biosecurity Ranger Program which helps protect Australia’s more than $60 billion agricultural industries by contributing to the delivery of enhanced biosecurity capability in northern Australia
• conducts surveillance across animal, plant and aquatic health in northern Australia for the early detection of pest, weeds and diseases that may establish via natural and human-mediated mechanisms
• manages the biosecurity risks in Torres Strait through regulated and unregulated pathways
• provides invertebrate diagnostics, biosecurity risk advice and technical training for border/post-border, post-entry quarantine and surveillance activities
• supports regulatory decision-making and biosecurity policy settings with Plant Health Diagnostics, scientific expertise and operational intelligence
• is tasked with the eradication of invasive exotic pests of environmental and plant biosecurity significance at or near Australia’s borders
• delivers laboratory management, data and systems.
