The Governor-General, may appoint one or more persons to act in the office of the Administrator of the Northern Territory during any vacancy in the office of the Administrator and to administer the government of the Territory during any vacancy in the office of the Administrator or whenever the Administrator is absent from duty or from the Territory or is, for any other reason, unable to exercise and perform the powers and functions of his or her office. The role of the Administrator is essentially the same as a State Governor and includes statutory duties (for example, providing assent to proposed laws of the Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory), representational duties (for example, awarding honours) and ceremonial duties (for example, becoming a patron of public institutions).
