First Nations Heritage, Wildlife and Planning

The Environment Protection Reform Division (headed by Dr Melissa McEwen) is responsible for administering and reforming environmental and heritage protections. The Division comprises two branches and two offices. We support the staged approach to reform of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act), aligned with the 2020 Independent Review of the EPBC Act, and co-designed reforms to Indigenous heritage protections. We also administer the regulatory functions of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act 1984 to ensure Indigenous cultural heritage is adequately protected, and the sustainable international trade in wildlife and wildlife products under the EPBC Act in accordance with Australia’s international commitments.
