The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD), as leader of Australia's Antarctic program, plays an important role in advancing Australia's Antarctic interests and achieving the government's Antarctic goals. It contributes to implementing government policy, taking an active role in the Antarctic Treaty System, and undertaking and supporting Antarctic and Southern Ocean research of national and international significance. The AAD also takes a lead role in protecting the Antarctic environment and administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
