The ABCB is a joint initiative of all levels of government in Australia and includes representatives from the building industry. Its mission is to address issues relating to health, safety, amenity and sustainability by providing for efficiency in the design, construction and performance of buildings through the national Building Code of Australia (BCA), and the development of effective regulatory and non-regulatory systems.
The Board sets minimum necessary technical building requirements, standards and regulatory systems that are nationally consistent between States and Territories and which are cost-effective, performance-based and facilitate modern and efficient building practices.
