Established under section 5 of the Australian Capital Territory (Planning and Land Management) Act 1988. Responsible for administering and reviewing the National Capital Plan, the object of which is to ensure that Canberra and the Australian Capital Territory are planned and developed in accordance with their national significance. Recommends and carries out works that maintain or enhance the character of the national capital, and is responsible for fostering an awareness of the national capital. On behalf of the Australian Government, manages national land designated as land for the special purposes of Canberra as the national capital. Responsible also for the leasing and management of land for diplomatic purposes, for conservation and maintenance of national memorials in Canberra and for the administration of proposals to the Canberra National Memorials Committee for new national memorials.
