Provides independent review of the activities of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, Australian Geospatial Organisation, Australian Secret Intelligence Service, Australian Signals Directorate, Defence Intelligence Organisation and Office of National Assessments to ensure that these agencies act legally and with propriety, comply with ministerial guidelines and directives and respect human rights. The office was established in 1987 by the Inspector-General of Intelligence and Security Act 1986. The Inspector-General can act independently to initiate inquiries or in response to a complaint. The Inspector-General can also undertake an inquiry in response to a reference from a Minister.
