A statutory authority established by the Australian Parliament on 1st January 1991 as Australia's national marine safety agency with responsibility for maritime safety, protection of the marine environment and aviation and marine search and rescue. Specific areas of operation include promulgating national and international maritime safety and environment protection standards, monitoring compliance of foreign ships visiting Australian ports with international safety and environmental standards, providing a national network of aids to navigation for commercial shipping operating around the Australian coast, managing the national plan for response to ship sourced pollution in the marine environment, coordinating search and rescue services for the civil maritime and aviation industries, and maintaining a maritime distress and safety communication network throughout Australia.
