The Tribunal is an independent body established under the Administrative Appeals Tribunal Act 1975. It provides individuals and agencies an independent review of a wide range of administrative decisions made by the Australian Government and some non-government bodies. The Tribunal can review only those decisions in relation to which it has been given jurisdiction by an Act or legislative instrument. Presently it has jurisdiction under more than 400 enactments covering areas such as social security, taxation, veterans' entitlements, workers' compensation, citizenship and immigration, civil aviation, customs, freedom of information and ASIO security assessments. The Small Taxation Claims Tribunal (STCT) is a separate tribunal established within the Taxation Appeals Division of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. The STCT provides quick and informal review of taxation decisions where the amount of tax in dispute is under $5000.
